Whiteplains Pilots Association Meeting
Meeting; Minutes
July 15, 2002
Dick Hitt, President of the Association, opened the meeting with a greeting and a purpose statement for the Association. The purpose of the Association is: to promote safety and the safe usage of the Whiteplains Aiport; to promote camaraderie among the pilots; and to promote communication within the pilot community.
There was no published agenda for this meeting.
Old Business:
We reviewed the previous meetings minutes and approved them by voice vote.
On the Action Item List, number 016: Neil to provide the sign and Dennis is to install it by the July 15 meeting. This was actually done! (Is it going to snow this year, it would seem so!!!!) Thanks to Niel for purchasing the sign and Dennis for installing it. (This project took 14 months to complete.)
Number 020 – storage shed. John Gardner reported we have collected $2600 toward the shed and we spent $60 for a survey. That leaves us $660 short. We discussed in detail the various approaches to getting the shed built. Ray Ackerman is pursuing having the roof and supports installed professionally. We decided most of us were too old, slow, and fragile to climb up on and build the roof. Several other people are going to check other sources of getting the shell done. We will finish the building ourselves after we get someone to build the supports and roof.
We next discussed approach to landing speeds, touch down zones, and missed approaches to Whiteplains. We seen to have a number of "hot" landings and "stretched-out" landings at Whiteplains. We discussed the causes and some solutions; i.e. removal of trees on 090; touchdown zones, etc. We decided to investigate touchdown zones and report back at the July meeting. Appointed Committee: Terry Yon, John Gardner, Bob Murphy. Not Done. We further discussed putting up placards with the "remaining" distance on the runway for both directions. This seems the best way to advise the pilots as to remaining "touch down" distance or missed approach point, without becoming "liable" for approach crashes.
People are driving up to and on the runway at the 27 end. The taxiway to the runway looks like a road when approached from the Phase II end. We decided to barricade the entrance. John Gardner volunteered to put up cones and a yellow ribbon. Not Done. A substitute bail of hay is currently being used.
There was a recent crash at Bamberg. We had a brief discussion of the crash. Little was known at this time. This discussion lead into a discussion of the possibility of a crash or accident at Whiteplains and what action(s) should be taken. Michael Branning is going to research AOPA and Dick Hitt is going to talk with CAE’s fire rescue and with the FAA to get a better grip on our needs and their requirements. Closed. Michael reports the AOPA doesn’t have anything and Dick reports no success in his inquiries. See New Business for next action. Closed.
New Business: / Safety:
Dick Hitt will try to arrange a visit by the CAE Fire Chief. Dick understands the Chief has a good presentation and demonstration of dealing with airplane "crashes."
Note: This has been confirmed for September 16, 2002, 7:00 p.m. at Niel’s hangar. The Chief is bringing someone from the Lexington Fire Service as well. He will make a presentation and he will do "live" demos of some of the equipment. Watch out for the fire at Niels!!
